Brief history: Kate (Kitty) was born in Pittsburgh, PA to a wealthy steel tycoon and his wife. Her mother was a known stage actress and dancer, and Kitty inherited the skill from much of her childhood spent with her mother. She was the oldest of 3 girls. When Kitty was five years old, her father enlisted in the Union army. With the war vastly approaching PA, Kitty was sent to live with an Aunt and Uncle (her father's older brother) who lived in Illinois, also wealthy and whom seemed unable to have children of their own. Her mother and two younger sisters died of an epidemic soon after, and her father, having survived the war, returned home to an empty family. He moved in with Kitty and his brother's family, but never recovered from the shock of battle. He hung himself in 1867. Her uncle's wife died soon after in childbirth, after receiving the desperately awaited pregnancy. Her uncle, a strong man, with good character much resemblent to that of her father pre-war, took Kitty and moved West in search of freedom and prosperity. They stumbled on Little Hope. It's from her uncle she gets her free and unbreakable spirit. She came to love her uncle as much as she would any father, but unfortunately, with no women around through most of her adolescence, she never really learned to be a true lady, the refinement, dignity, and “blandness” as she'd call it. Most'd say she's better for it.
